Martin & Osa Johnson Safari Museum
111 North Lincoln, Chanute, Kansas 66720, (316) 431-2730 - Conrad G. Froehlich, Director Barbara Henshall, Curator
Located in an old railroad station, this is a great museum that preserves the memory, achievements and artifacts of a truly remarkable couple. As photographers, explorers and naturalists, the Johnsons from 1917 to 1936 sought out the tribal man in Africa, Borneo and the South Seas. The legacy they left is astonishing -- over ten thousand photographs, a huge film library and a considerable collection of fine tribal artifacts. The museum has continued to build on this foundation adding, over the years the Stott Explorers Library which has some ten thousand books, journals, and manuscripts specialising in early African exploration, ornithology and primatology as well as the Imperato African Art Gallery which boasts a fine collection of West African artifacts.
The Martin & Osa Johnson Safari Museum may be a little off the beaten path but it is a very unique resource and well worth a visit.
